Work Plan

TELEIOS is a three year project organised around the following eight technical work packages:

  • WP1: The TELEIOS infrastructure
  • WP2: Data models and query languages
  • WP3: Knowledge discovery from EO images
  • WP4: Scalable storage and query processing for EO image metadata
  • WP5: Ad-hoc array queries for EO images
  • WP6: A Virtual Observatory for TerraSAR-X data
  • WP7: Real-time fire monitoring based on continuous acquisitions of EO images and geospatial data
  • WP8: Involving the TELEIOS user community

The above work packages run in four phases.

Phase I: User requirements (Month 1 to 3)

This phase involves the detailed specification of the user requirements. TELEIOS will collect requirements from the two use cases of the project (WP6: “A Virtual Observatory for TerraSAR-X data” and WP7: “Real-time fire monitoring based on continuous acquisitions of EO images and geospatial data”) and the wider community of EO scientists. To facilitate the involvement of the wider international community of EO scientists in our project, work package WP8 will organize 3 TELEIOS User Community workshops at the premises of the ESA Center for Earth Observation, Frascati, Italy.

The first of these workshops will take place during Phase I of TELEIOS and its purpose is to capture the requirements of EO scientists with respect to the kinds of software to be developed in TELEIOS. The user requirements capture of the two use cases will take place during the first 3 months of the project, and it will be led by the use case partners DLR and NOA (for WP6 and WP7 respectively). The user requirements specifications to be produced during Phase I will drive the work of Phases II-IV of the project.

Phase II: Foundational research on data models and languages (Month 3 to 12)

This phase involves specifying and formalizing the data models and languages to be used in the project. It starts immediately after the user requirements have been delivered and discussed in detail within the consortium. The research to be carried out in Phase I involves: (i) defining the extensions to stRDF and stSPARQL for temporal and geospatial data that will be implemented in WP4, (ii) defining the array data model and query languages to be implemented on top of MonetDB in WP5 for ad-hoc array queries over EO images. This research is carried out in WP2 under the lead of partner NKUA but with significant contributions from CWI as well. The relevant research activities take place during the first year of the project.

Phase III: Component level research – First version of the TELEIOS infrastructure (Month 6 to 24)

This phase involves the delivery of the preliminary version and the 1st version of the TELEIOS infrastructure in time for the 1st and 2nd review of the project by the Commission (expected immediately after Months 12 and 24). The work of this phase starts on Month 6 when the first set of data models and languages to be used in the project have been specified, and continues up to Month 18 when the first version of the software components of WP3, WP4 and WP5 are delivered. The software component to be delivered by WP3 is an extension of the KIM subsystem of KEO. The software component to be delivered by WP4 is an implementation on top of MonetDB of the extensions to stRDF and stSPARQL as defined in WP2. The software component to be delivered by WP5 is an implementation of the array data model on top of MonetDB.

Months 19-21 of the project are devoted to integrating the individual components delivered by WP3-5 and the components to be re-used from KEO/KIM to come up with the first version of the TELEIOS infrastructure. Finally, Months 22-24 are devoted to partially implementing the WP6-7 use case requirements on the TELEIOS infrastructure. The 2nd TELEIOS User Community workshop will take place during the 23rd month of the project. In this workshop, the 1st version of the TELEIOS infrastructure will be presented in a tutorial way to the participants, hands-on sessions will be organized and participants will be invited to build small applications (with the help of TELEIOS partners) so that the TELEIOS infrastructure is evaluated. The results of this workshop and the user evaluations will be delivered as Deliverable 8.2v1 (Month 24).

Phase IV: Component level research – Final version and evaluation of the TELEIOS infrastructure (Month 24 to 36)

This phase is essentially a re-run of Phase III so that individual components are enhanced with additional functionality (Months 24 to 30), the final version of the TELEIOS infrastructure is delivered to the users (Month 32) and the use cases are implemented completely (Month 34). In the last two months of the project, the TELEIOS infrastructure is evaluated by the use case partners and by the participants of the 3rd TELEIOS User Community workshop. This workshop will be similar to the 2nd User Community workshop and will result in a detailed evaluation of the final version of the TELEIOS infrastructure to be presented in Deliverable D8.2v2 (Month 36).
